USCIS case status · Requests for evidence
Request For Additional Evidence Was Sent
What it means
An officer reviewed your case and needs more proof before deciding, for example more financial documents, proof of a relationship or a medical exam form. This is a request for evidence (RFE). It is not a denial.
What usually happens next
The case waits for your response. Once USCIS receives it, the status changes, and a decision or another step follows.
What to do now
- Note the response deadline in the letter and plan to answer well before it.
- Answer every item the letter lists; a partial answer can lead to a denial.
- Put the RFE notice on top of your response and keep copies.
- If the request is complex or you do not understand it, talk to an immigration attorney.
Questions
- Does an RFE mean my case will be denied?
- No. Many approved cases had an RFE. It means the officer needs more before deciding.
- Can I ask for more time to answer?
- Generally no; RFE deadlines are rarely extended. Send what you have before the deadline.
