USCIS case status · Requests for evidence

Request For Initial Evidence Was Sent

What it means

USCIS mailed you a request for something that should have been included when you filed, such as a missing form, a signature, a photo or a required document. It is common and usually easy to fix.

What usually happens next

The case is paused until USCIS receives your answer or the deadline passes. After you respond, the status changes to show the response was received.

What to do now

  • Read the letter carefully and note the deadline; it is strict.
  • Send exactly what is asked, with the request letter on top, to the address in the letter.
  • Keep copies and proof of delivery.

Questions

What happens if I miss the deadline?
USCIS can decide the case on what it has, which often means a denial. If you cannot meet the deadline, get help right away.
