Case Was Received

What it means

USCIS has your application or petition, accepted it for processing and gave it a receipt number. A receipt notice (Form I-797C) is mailed to you, and it is your proof that the case is pending. It does not mean anyone has looked at the evidence yet.

What usually happens next

For most forms that need fingerprints, the next update is a biometrics appointment notice, usually within a few weeks. Forms without fingerprints go straight into the queue to be reviewed, and the status may not change again for months.

What to do now

  • Keep the receipt notice somewhere safe; you need the receipt number for every inquiry.
  • Check that your name, date of birth and address on the notice are correct.
  • If you move, update your address with USCIS within 10 days.

Questions

How long after "Case Was Received" does something happen?
It depends on the form and the office. Look up the published processing time for your form; being inside that range is normal.
Can I travel or work with only a receipt notice?
Only in specific situations, such as some work permit renewals that extend automatically. The receipt alone is not a travel document. Check the rules for your form before relying on it.
